Describe the professional design process

From Cory Skaaren’s “The Creative Process”,

“The creative process is, simply put, the steps used to manage a project, outline goals, and generate ideas.”

Skaaren explained and detailed the creative process in 6 steps. The 6 steps of the creative process are as followed: (1) administration and acceptance, (2) research and define the problem, (3) ideation, (4) judgement, (5) execution, and (6) feedback.

The first step is to define expectations, time frame, and responsibilities around the project’s scope. The roles involve are the project stakeholders because they detail the responsibilities, project resources, goals, budget, and schedule.

The second step is to identify and understand the problem. The roles involve in this step are usability lead and information architect because they work collaboratively to research, evaluate, and shape user experience.

The third step is ideation. It is best to explore and find a suitable solution that best solves the problem. A web technology lead may be involved in this step because the role has a broad knowledge of technological environments and languages as well as a broad understanding of technological options.

The fourth step is judgement. The role involve in this step would be the web project manager. The web project manager is involved in the entire process, but I believe that the web project manager plays a crucial role in this step to see if the presented solutions would align with the goals and requirements. I find it is important to not overlook this step because it is best to note that the creative process is a cycle and it is necessary to step back to re-strategize and re-evaluate the goals to proceed again.

The fifth step is execution or to build it. The roles involve in this step would be either a web technology lead or site production lead. It may even be both because a web technology lead understands the environment and languages and a site production lead drafts the website designs into pages.

The last step is feedback. The roles involve in this process may be a site editor or web project manager because they may edit the content created, layout, measure success, and identify rooms for improvements.

Why is having a process essential?

Having a process is essential because it acts as a guidance to improve productivity, promote communication and relations, detail responsibilities and needs, and engage all active parties in working towards a common goal – that is, to find the best suitable solution. Most importantly, I find it crucial to begin the creative process with a purpose. Adding purpose to the creative process helps drive the force and determination to be successful and to learn from failure.

“After all, a failure is not one if you learn from it.” – Hong D.

Where do you feel you might best fit into the process?

I believe I am best fit in research and define the problem or judgement because I am detail-oriented and analytical. However, I am pursuing a career as a full stack web developer, and I hope to be involved in every step of the creative process and have room for growth.
